Chocolate is delicious, and it is good for you. Sorry milk and white chocolate, this love letter is to dark chocolate only!

darkchocolateWhy Dark? Dark chocolate contains a higher concentration of cocoa (which contains all the good stuff) and lacks the presence of milk. Studies show that milk actually interferes with the body’s ability to absorb antioxidants from chocolate. So it is not only important to purchase dark chocolate, if you are looking to obtain health benefits from this treat, it is also important to not drink milk while consuming your dark chocolate truffles.

Your Gut Will Thank You. Since dark chocolate is high in fiber, it can help keep you full, longer which in small portions can actually aid in weight loss. Studies have also shown it has beneficial effects on microbial activity in the gut, aiding in digestion.  (Study appeared in Journal of Proteome Research)

Your Heart Will Thank You. Dark chocolate contains high levels of cocoa phenols, which are known to lower blood pressure (moderately) and boost epicatechin levels in the blood. Cocoa has anti-clotting and blood thinning properties, which can improve blood flow and circulation.

Its good for your skin! Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants help absorb destructive molecules called free radicals that are implicated in heart disease and aging. It even offers some (minimal) protection from UV damage. Don’t get me wrong – this is no excuse for skimping on the sunscreen.

French Broad Chocolates

A shopping tip for you. When looking for the perfect chocolate gift for your loved ones, make sure you are not buying heavily sweetened dark chocolate. I would recommend purchasing organic chocolate sweetened with palm sugar. Palm sugar is very low on the glycemic index, minimally spiking blood sugar. An easy way to do this is selecting a bar with the highest content of cacao. The more cacao the less space there is for additional additives. This is usually in a % form on the front of the package.

Happy Valentines Day everyone, enjoy your sweets! Dr. Cole
